Enable Automatic Billing After First Subscription Invoice Payment

What is it?

You now have more options for subscription billing. With this update you can set up subscriptions to automatically charge after the first invoice payment, which gives you flexibility in how you collect and store payment methods.

Why does it matter?

This gives your customer more options. They can now pay the first invoice manually, then have future payments auto-charge using that same payment method. This saves your customers time and helps ensure you get paid.

How does it work?

When you are in the Subscriptions Editor, you will now see more options under "Automatically charge the subscription" in the Collection process section. Under the Charge method, you will now see "Collect payment method on the first paid invoice " as an option in addition to "Charge the stored payment method."

Subscription Editor Options

If you choose to collect the payment method on the first paid invoice, then you will also be able to set the payment term of the first invoice. The first invoice will be sent on the billing date, and after the first invoice, the customer will be automatically charged on each billing date.

If you'd like to store the payment method used to pay for the first invoice, so that you can also charge that stored payment method in the future, you should also turn on the "Store payment method for future charges" setting.

Within the Subscription side panel, you'll be able to see the status of the subscription payment.

We have also added a setting in Subscriptions Settings to add an automatic payments consent checkbox at checkout.
