Customize optional data permissions for OAuth Apps

What is it?

Apps can request optional data permissions on top of the required permissions needed for basic functionality. Previously, these appeared on the consent screen with no way to opt out. Now, you can uncheck the ones you don't want to share before completing the install.

This experience is already live for the HubSpot connector for ChatGPT and HubSpot connector for Claude, and for accounts enrolled in the App Install Governance beta. This release extends it to all apps.

Why does it matter?

This update gives you more control over what data you share when installing an app. If an app requests contacts as an optional permission, you can decide whether to grant that access at install time.

This matters more as apps request broader sets of optional permissions to support a wider range of use cases. Not every user needs every capability, and not every user should have to grant access to data they don't intend to use.

How does it work?

For users

No action needed. You'll automatically see checkable optional permissions when installing apps. All optional permissions are selected by default. Uncheck any you don't want to share with the app before completing the install.

For developers

This change only affects apps that use optional permissions. Since optional permissions are checked by default, the majority of installs will proceed as before. Apps are already built to handle cases where optional permissions aren't granted.
