HubSpot Developer MCP server (Local)

What is it?

The Developer MCP (Model Context Protocol) server is locally installed via the HubSpot CLI, enabling you to more intelligently build, test, and deploy integrations on the HubSpot Developer Platform. This unlocks compatibility with AI-powered clients, streamlining the development life cycle through natural-language prompts.

Supported clients for the CLI MCP server include Cursor, VS Code, Claude Code, and Windsurf.

Why does it matter?

By delivering relevant context and functionality to IDE copilots and AI coding agents, the Developer MCP server helps you to save time, improve quality, and reduce costs when building on HubSpot.

New project-based apps in the new developer platform version use a file-based build and deploy framework that contains an app’s configuration, assets, and source code. These apps can be built, tested, and deployed automatically, while existing apps can be migrated (Private, Public), updated, and enhanced through simple chat-based prompts.

Automatically build, test, and deploy new apps; or migrate, update, and enhance existing apps.

You can use the Developer MCP server for assistance with common tasks, like:

  • HubSpot CLI Tutorial: get guidance on common commands for building, testing, and managing apps
  • Creating new projects: generate HubSpot projects with specified features and configurations
  • Adding features and content to existing projects: add components (such as app cards, workflow actions, webhooks, or settings pages) or CMS components (such as themes, templates, or modules) to existing projects
  • Validating projects: check local configuration and surface potential issues before deployment
  • Uploading projects: send your project to HubSpot, with automatic deployment by default
  • Deploying projects: manually launch the most recent build when auto-deploy is turned off

How does it work?

The Developer MCP server is available in HubSpot CLI v7.60.0 or later and requires Developer Platform v2025.2.

  1. To install or update, run npm install -g @hubspot/cli@latest in your terminal.
  2. Then set up the MCP server by running hs mcp setup.
  3. Once the Developer MCP Server is installed locally, select a supported client (Cursor, VS Code, Claude Code, or Windsurf), restart it, and begin prompting your AI copilot to build on HubSpot.

Example prompts include:

  • “Create a new project with app cards and settings”
  • “Help me add a custom workflow action to my existing project”
  • “Validate my project, then upload it to HubSpot”

Note: For best results, use Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet models (Claude 4 Sonnet or newer). Other models are supported, but may be less consistent.
